Today’s our fourth birthday, but sadly it will be our last.

When we opened we thought we’d last about a month! Now, four years later it’s time to draw the curtain on what has been an amazing experience.

If it were possible I’d keep the Café open forever – but it’s not possible.  I’m focused on finishing my law degree as well as other internet ventures, and I don’t seem to have the spare time that I’d like to have.

We finish with a proud record and that’s a good way to finish.

Over the four years we’ve had almost 1.5 million visitors, 147,000 comments, and 1,200 posts. These are remarkable statistics. But best of all we’ve shared this experience with hundreds of amazing people, many of whom I now consider truly great friends. They all added to the experience, and they all made it worthwhile.

There are too many to thank – both as authors or commenters – so forgive me if I skip that formality. However, I would like to reserve a special thanks to Min. The Café wouldn’t have had a heartbeat without her.

The Café won’t be disappearing into the internet oblivion though; it will be kept open indefinitely as an ‘archive’ of everyone’s contribution. So yes, by all means we’ll still be here if you wish to continue adding comments on any of our existing posts, but I will not be adding any new ones.

And of course we’ll still be able to catch up with each other over at The AIMN, which has grown beyond all my expectations and where many of my friends from the Café now gather. So we’ll see you there.

  6. Such a shame. What we really need is more uninformed, rampant propaganda supporting a morally and intellectually bankrupt Left leaning political establishment. Woe is us. With no Cafe Whispers, we’re in danger of the void being taken up by objective comment, critique and review of both sides of politics which makes no excuses for anyone.
    How will the ALP/Greens cope without the blind faith of its supporters spewing hate, vitriol and ignorant bile towards the centre right of politics?

    Thanks also to joni for taking a ‘temporary’ hiatus from Blogocrats, which gave the impetus to get the Café running full steam ahead.

    Thanks also to the many contributors over the years – along with the blogmaster(s) and other administrators (Fu), commenters make the site what it is was.

    A special thanks to my cellar drinking buddy, LOVO, the cleaner Tom R, and of course Michael for keeping it well stocked with quality reds, a little beer, some Mateus for Min, and Blackberry Nip for LOVO 😆 😆

  36. Chinas Grip Tightens on Rare Earth;

    The discovery of a small rare earth ore body at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean last week triggered a fleeting hope that China’s monopoly on the materials would be broken. China currently produces 97% of such metals

    Unfortunately, the discovery may not have the impact many had hoped, which means prices for rare earth metals will continue to soar. That’s bad news for countries like the United States and Japan, which count on the scarce materials for high-tech industries. Developed countries require rare earths to manufacture a wide range of high-tech products, including flat-panel displays, computers, hybrid car batteries, cell phones, solar panels and some advanced weapons systems.

    For instance, there are more than 50 pounds of rare earth metals under the hood of a Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE ADR: TM) Prius. Terbium can cut the electricity demand of lights by up to 80% and fractions of dysprosium can significantly reduce the weight of magnets in electric motors. But China, which produces 97% of the world’s rare earth metals, has drastically reduced its exports over the past several years, driving prices skyward.

    Citing “environmental protection,” China cut its rare earth exports to just 30,259 metric tons in 2010 from 67,521 metric tons in 2005.

    That has caused runaway price increases for many of the 17 metals.

    Over the past year dysprosium, used in specialized magnets, shot up from $300 per kilogram to $1,900 per kilogram and even higher. Neodymium has spiked to $450 per kilogram from $45 per kilogram late last year.

    The Market Vectors Rare Earth Metals ETF (NYSE: REMX) is up 7.25% year-to-date and 32% over the past 12 months, as a result.

    That’s why many analysts – and Western companies – breathed a sigh of relief this week when the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled that China’s strict export policies on certain raw materials such as manganese, silicon carbide and yellow phosphorus, had broken global trade rules.

    Nor would I myself ever have found my way into blogging, verse and satire without Miglo’s encouraging comments in those early days of 2010.     As for Gillard, well she really had no class, she changed her mode of speech to appear working class. You can be working class without having to spoik loik a bogan. I don’t think his comments about Gillard were in any way proper. I didn’t agree with any criticism of Gillard based on her marital and parental status, the size of any of her clothing, or the colour of her hair.     I’m not an economist, but sounds pretty straightforward to me.

    It did not attack any individual personally, but I was subject to a barrage of personal abuse in response.

    I am quite familiar with that, it’s a common response from the talentless hypocrites of the Left when they are unable to engage in proper debate.
