In July some time an armed robber stole $500,000 in cash from a city bank here in Canberra. Two bank workers were shot during the hold-up, with one dying two days later in hospital.
The community outrage shook the capital. The media demanded blood. The offender needed to be captured as soon as possible before more people fell victim to this wicked, evil man.
Demands for the reintroduction of the death penalty screamed across the daily news. And naturally, Tony Abbott was asked to comment:
“This is what the carbon tax has done to innocent Australians. Unsure of their future, Julia Gillard has driven this hard working Australian to the point of despair. I feel for his family. But having said that, he needs to be reprimanded as quickly as possible and brought to trial. As Prime Minister I will ensure that all criminals are captured within five minutes of committing their crime”.
The media were impressed, but nonetheless wanted the offender’s blood.
He was captured after a tip off six days later. All the money was recovered. It came to pass that the murderous bank robber was a Member of Parliament in the Abbott Opposition.
Oh how the story changed. Tony Abbott refused to comment but the media did so on his behalf.
“He is the true victim in this saga”.
“The money has been returned so let’s just all forget about it”.
“How much of the tax payers’ money was wasted on the incompetent AFP?”
“Colleagues stand beside the criminal, each saying what a great bloke he is”.
“He was suffering from depression at the time”.
“The shots were actually fired by an unknown assassin hiding in a grassy knoll”.
“The shooting victims should have been more careful. Their actions were in contravention to the bank’s standard OH&S procedures”.
Blah blah blah ad nauseum.
Sounds a bit like their reaction to the Slipper finding, doesn’t it? If you haven’t caught the news, you can read about it here.
And that’s where the story stops.
We all know just how manipulative, dishonest, sensationalist, gutless, unfair and unbalanced the media is in this country. Today they have taken it one step further.
After practically charging, convicting and passing judgement on Peter Slipper since this scandal broke they have now gone very quiet on the actual guts of the story? I hate to remind them that Slipper has won the case so why aren’t they asking these questions?
“How embedded in this affair were members of the Liberal National Party, including Tony Abbott?”
“Should Peter Slipper sue James Ashby for defamation?”
“Was Steve Lewis complicit in this?”
“Was this case launched for political purposes?” and . . .
“Will a Judicial Inquiry be held to determine the culprits?”
“Did Senator Brandis lie during today’s press conference with Nicola Roxon?”
“What the hell is Joe Hockey talking about?”
“Should Opposition Leader Tony Abbott explain whether it was appropriate that Mr Brough still run in Fisher in the 2013 election?”
“The judge was critical of Ashby’s lawyer, accusing him of professional misconduct for making “scandalous and irrelevant” allegations under privilege. Will this be pursued?”
But no, they prefer to ask about Peter Slipper’s $50,000 legal fees. Oh, and paint Mal Brough as the real victim in this, of course. They’ve already sentenced Slipper to hang, so he must hang.
The story about the bank robbery was fictional. Sadly, the response from our political news media is also the making of a good fiction story.
And here’s a little ‘by the way’: the Slipper story is already off the front page of news.com. It has been replaced by a “Juliar” headline.
I reiterate, we all know just how manipulative, dishonest, sensationalist, gutless, unfair and unbalanced the media is in this country. Today they have demonstrated this in spades.
