We’re moving!

No, I’m not back yet, just here to make a brief announcement.

Café Whispers is moving to a new home in the not too distant future.  I’ll be saying goodbye to cafewhispers.wordpress.com and saying hello to http://www.cafewhispers.org.

Only the address will be changing, at the moment, as we move to bigger premises, ie, more data storage space.  There is a limit to the amount of data we can have in WordPress.com and it is fast being approached.  We may lose a few things along the way, such as the number of site visits and other stats but I’m hopeful these can all be retained.  It’s wait and see.

The new premises will come with a lot more extras, which I’ll add to the blog at a later date once I learn how to drive them. Not being the world’s greatest tech-head, this may take time. 😦

The new site will spring up as soon as my web hosts have transferred everything from the old address, but it won’t be just yet.  So don’t panic if one day you can’t find us – just trot along to http://www.cafewhispers.org.  Make a note of that address; I look forward to seeing you there.

There is a possibility I’m going to explore which might mean that this old site can remain open as well, which could see it handed over to one or some of our regulars if they wish to maintain it.  If it is one or more of the current authors I will ensure that their posts remain with the site.  Leave a message on this thread if you’re interested.

Yes, it’s a bit of a dilemma for me.  There is no choice but to upgrade the site but all the same I’m very sad to have to let go of the old one.  But there’s no way I’d be able to look after both of them.  Whoever takes this site over will have to do so on their own back as I won’t have to time to be of any assistance.

This is all dependent, of course, on this site being able to remain open once the new site is up and running.  I’ll check that out with WordPress.

In the meantime, don’t panic.  We’re still here for the time being and you’ll get plenty of advance notice before the changeover.

  1. Hmm extra expense , less support form WP and a rather dubious benefit if you ask me. I tried going self hosted and it was very disappointing in terms of hits and visits, consider remaining at wordpress but with your own .org URL that way you lose the WP the advertising on your page but retain the support and the hosting is cheaper I know that the idea of being your own webmaster sounds good but I bet you that it will end up costing more than you expect and give you more grief than its worth.
This is by the way a totally non political comment offered purely because I like this site and would hate to see it go backwards because of such a move.

  2. Iain forever the defeatist. What is it with the right and negativity.

That you need to expand out is a sign of great success and I for one believe in you and that your new place will do well.

    certainly not!
I just don’t think that self hosting is of necessity either something that expands your audience or that it is a sign of “success” it just adds to the administrative and maintenance burden for a site and makes it more expensive to run.

  4. While there are advantages to wordpress, there are also disadvantages (which have been highlighted above). It is a trade off, hosting your own has it’s own brand of issues too, but with those problems comes freedom to implement your own visions. Also, pretty sure you can implement a wordpress site (or similar) into your own site as an addition.

There is a large enough community here, of which many (myself included (winks)) are quite happy to help out if the need arises. From my understanding Iain, you hosted yours by yourself (?) which, I will admit, is a huge undertaking. Many hands and all that.

Mind you, it is a brave move Migs, and I hope it all goes well.

  5. I successfully host a PHP forum with imbedded blog and several other add-ons that has around 900 permanent members. I’ve been running it for three years now and have one other person as a moderator who does a lot of the research work that the site is heavy in.

It’s not all that fraught with danger and with a little planning, a good backup system for both the site and database and spending regular time administering it, not that difficult to do, especially if you have others helping out, something Migs will not be short of.

I have every confidence it will do well.

  6. I would pay a ‘voluntary contibution’ if there would be a bigger cellar in the new premise’s !! 🙂 ……….. oh and some coffee…. 😉 …… and a pool table…..and….. and I hope you will keep the archive section, it gives me something to read while Im down there …. 😀
