Interestingly, I was just about to write a post on the things I enjoy, respect, luv, kinda like that are American – thought I’d fit it in before the American mid-term elections…it’s good to be kind & balanced sometimes – when lo & behold, I found myself accused of bein’ “rabidly anti American” by a valuable contributor on another blog.
Talk about a coincidence. What a freaky world we live in. Must be synchronicity. 🙂
So let me repeat my reply to this most valuable contributor:
As for bein’ “rabidly anti-American”, that’s claptrap. I merely point out the aspects of America, certain states, individuals, that I feel require scrutiny or criticism in certain instances. Occasionally I will give the thumbs up or recommend somethin’ I believe is worthy of such. I am no more or less anti-American than the average world citizen.
The United States of America is a patchwork quilt. It’s a complex, ethnically diverse nation w/ a colourful history…some of its characters, events, progress, inventions, environment impactin’ practices, military/intelligence strategies, corporate behaviour, political stances, policy initiatives, economic responses and so on are less worthy of praise than others.
If I was as fervently anti-American as you seem to imply, then why would I spend an inordinate amount of time defendin’ the Obama administration, aspects of the Clinton admin… quotin’ various American characters I respect or feel said somethin’ sensible at the time…promotin’ music, books, films, architecture, artwork, beverages & foodstuffs (incl: Tabasco, Celestial Seasonings herbal teas)…the establishment of American National Parks…the Chicago Black Hawks ice hockey team???…the list goes on.
There are plenty of Libertarians & Progressives in America who are far more distrustin’ & suspicious of their governments & certain corporations & military industrial complexes’ motives & actions than me…that’s a fact.
BTW, I got my luv of baseball from watchin’ Major League Baseball…and films like ‘The Natural’. It’s a great American pastime.
I also like Baby Ruth bars:
I think that went well. Tho, I did neglect to mention a few things.
At present I’m enjoyin’ & have enjoyed many HBO shows, including Curb Yer Enthusiasm, True Blood, Hung, John Adams, Generation Kill, In Treatment & Deadwood. Top stuff.
I really dig American sci-fi…recent Battlestar Galactica, all Star Trek & Stargate series, Warehouse 13, Caprica, Eureka, X-Files…you name it…and have an addiction to a number of sitcoms rangin’ from The Big Bang Theory to The Office and Two and a Half Men. Luved M.A.S.H., my all-time fave. Kicks-ass.
My wife (aka sanqween) & I also enjoy endin’ some viewin’ nites w/ an episode of Monk or Psych or some other quirky murder mystery show that the Americans produce so well…bein’ so crackers as they are.
Each evenin’, if possible, we watch The Daily Show & Colbert Report. At least once a week I take in PBS Newshour. Occasionally CNN’s Situation Room. I’m a news glutton.
I regularly visit sites such as The Huffington Post, CounterPunch, Salon.com, New York Times, IMDB (The Internet Movie Database), Wikipedia, AMG (All Music Guide), Pitchfork (guide to independent music and beyond), YouTube and eMusic (have an annual subscription)…to name a few.
I reckon some Americans do well out of me…as I do out of them.
A few of my fave American quotes:
I embarked on my life – I didn’t do anything. I don’t have an explanation.
The truth is, in order to get things like universal health care and a revamped education system, then someone is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more.
Another flaw in the human character is that everybody wants to build and nobody wants to do maintenance.
I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can’t see from the center.
Don’t try to solve serious matters in the middle of the night.
Philip K. Dick
Sometimes the appropriate response to reality is to go insane.
Philip K. Dick, Valis
I just don’t know why they’re shooting at us. All we want to do is bring them democracy and white bread. Transplant the American dream. Freedom. Achievement. Hyperacidity. Affluence. Flatulence. Technology. Tension. The inalienable right to an early coronary sitting at your desk while plotting to stab your boss in the back. (Hawkeye, “O.R.” ep: M.A.S.H.)
So, tell us what you like(d) about America. Ya might even mention the political landscape…Martin Luther King…or the CIA…or Fritz the Cat…or Tales of the City…perhaps John Holmes or Linda Lovelace?
Hopefully not a certain group of fast food joints and soft drinks that have been advertised more than breaths we take,,,and now have as much appeal to me & many others as suppositories.
